​About This Volunteer Opportunity

The Our Military Kids® 6th Annual Courageous Kids Contest honors military children and teens from across the country during April, the Month of the Military Child.

Friends, family, teachers, and coaches are encouraged to nominate a child or sibling group who demonstrates courage, resilience, and strength in their local communities, within their families, at school, or in their extracurricular activities. Nominees must have a parent who, in 2025, deployed overseas or was activated on a stateside mission with the National Guard or Reserve OR underwent treatment for post-9/11, combat-related injuries, illnesses, or wounds.

All nominees will receive a personalized, digital nomination award. Up to thirteen winners will be selected to receive a $300 cash stipend, a personalized award certificate, and have their stories shared on OMK’s website, social media channels, and newsletter throughout the Month of the Military Child.

USAA team members are welcome to serve as volunteers on the following contest committees:

-Nomination Review Committee: The Nomination Review Committee is an integral part of the contest that helps to determine contest winners. Members are given a prestigious front-row seat to military kids' powerful stories of courage, resilience, and strength as they review and evaluate nominations.

Beginning on February 24, 2026, and ending on March 15, 2026, Nomination Review Committee members will receive weekly batches of 10-20 nominations to review and score via a survey platform. Committee members have six days (Tuesday - Sunday) to complete their review of each batch of nominations.

Additional Details: You will receive a Survey Monkey link granting you access to contest nominations to read through and evaluate weekly, with the last day for reviews being Sunday, March 8, 2025.
